Top Ten Female MMA Update

It's time for another Top Ten "most searched" female MMA update.
Which makes this interesting because now I can compare these fighters to the WAMMA Top Ten Rankings.

First up:
1 Gina Carano (7-0-0)
What a surprise huh?
Didn't see that one coming did you?
Number one here and on WAMMA's list.

2. Karen Williams (3-2-0)
Number two on this list and number seven on the other list.
Her latest loss was to Erin Toughill on February 6th, 2009.

3. Kim Couture (1-1-0)
Comes in at three on this list, not on the WAMMA list at all.
Understandable because some fight experts regard her as a "novelty"fighter.
Not gonna argue the point, it's up to her to prove them wrong.

4. Emily Thompson (3-0-0)
Four on mine, eight on theirs.
She'll be facing Erin Toughill (man she gets around!) at the Palace Fighting Championship on May 8th.

5. Kaitlin Young (4-2-0)
Number five on mine, not ranked on the WAMMA.
Just did a write up on her.

6. Michelle Waterson (4-2-0)
Six here, again, not ranked at WAMMA.
Same record as Kaitlin Young, but then again, she's not ranked either.

7. Christiane Santos (6-1-0)
Number seven here and tied with Gina on the WAMMA list.
She should be either one or two.

8. Erin Toughill (9-2-1)
Eight here and six on theirs.
I really think Erin should be ranked higher.

9. Julie Kedzie (9-7-0)
Nine here, again, not ranked on WAMMA.

10. Tara LaRosa (16-1-0)
Won 16, lost 1?
Why isnt she at the top of both lists?
Did she just fight chumps?

Female MMA Fighters

Looking for some stuff on the web, I ran into two different stories about two different women that I think really shows the drive and determination behind female mixed martial artists.
Female MMA is not easy, nor is it an easy road to take. Don't get me wrong, it's hard on the men as well. But the women have to undergo the same training and punishment and still have to deal with being a female in what is basically a man's sport.
But like I said, these two ladies show what it takes to compete.

First, a story from Portland Oregon about female MMA fighter Jody De Simone.
http://wweek.com/editorial/3509/12054/

Then an in depth story about female MMA fighter Cindy Hales from Seattle.

Gina Carano versus Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos?

Now that Gina Carano has defeated Kelly Kobald, the MMA fans are clammoring for a new bout.
Gina Carano versus Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.
Santos fairly easily crushed Yoko Takahashi, while Kobald gave Carano a run for her money, even winning one round in a judge's opinion.
Now is the stage set for Carano versus Santos?
The Face of women's MMA against The Destroyer?
You have to admit, the hype around this sounds almost like a Hollywood movie.
No offense to either women (I think they are both pretty in their own way), but it feels almost like Rocky and Clubber Lang in Rocky 3.

MMA pioneer Debi Purcell on Sexton, road to mainstream TV | MMAFighting.com

Debi Purcell, boxing kung fu, fighting, mma

Interviews - MMA pioneer Debi Purcell on Sexton, road to mainstream TV | MMAFighting.com:

"In late 2007, Muscle and Fitness HERS wrote an article about female fitness role models entitled, “Women Strength”. The article opened by introducing readers to four women that were the class of their sports.

'Skateboarding has Tony Hawk. Women's soccer has Mia Hamm. And if female mixed martial arts (MMA) ever goes mainstream, it will have Debi Purcell,' the magazine said.

Unfortunately, when female MMA first did go mainstream the woman most credited for helping to start and keep the sport alive wasn’t getting the fights on television. Purcell, whose website FighterGirls.com helped keep the sport vibrant in the dark years was notably absent."

One-on-one with Rosi Sexton, PhD (Part I) | Fight Ticker

Exclusive: One-on-one with Rosi Sexton, PhD (Part I) | Fight Ticker:

"A few mixed martial artists have been heralded for their high educational accomplishments. But no elite mixed martial artist can come close to the level of education held by professional mixed martial artist, Rosi Sexton, who makes her home in the United Kingdom.

Coming off the heels of a tough split decision victory over Debi Purcell, the 9-1 EliteXC competitor took time to chat with me about everything from school to fighting to family. With a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cambridge and PhD in theoretical computer science from the University of Manchester, this fighter, healer, and mother breaks down her multitude of specialties. Oh, and while building her pro MMA career, she’s simultaneously finishing up another professional degree in osteopathy. Those darn over achievers!"

Between the ropes: Female boxer puts her heart into ring

Between the ropes: Female boxer puts her heart into ring
By Julie Randle
Wednesday, February 27, 2008 7:18 AM CST

Five years ago, Jamie O'Hare decided to fight back and she's been fighting ever since.

O'Hare, a professional boxer, came to the sweet science after she was stalked as a college student by a man who lived in a half-way house near her Springfield, Mo., apartment complex.

The man used to wait outside her apartment, watch her while she sunbathed at the apartment pool and tried to force flowers on her. After he physically harassed her, she decided she had had enough. She enrolled in a self-defense class at a karate studio.

"It opened me up to self-defense that became my life," said O'Hare, a 25-year-old North County resident. "I became confident and stronger and it gave me a new way to define myself. I didn't feel like a victim."

Self-defense led to kickboxing and then amateur boxing. Twenty amateur bouts and one professional bout later, she will take on Carrine Hamlett from Georgia in a match of welterweights March 8 at the Renaissance St. Louis Grand & Suites Hotel, 800 Washington Ave. O'Hare is one of 24 competitors fighting in the Xtreme Fight Party, an event that will feature boxing and mixed martial arts --- a full contact sports that combines various fighting styles including wrestling, kickboxing and boxing.

Ultimate pint-size fighter

Ultimate pint-size fighter
Feb 24 2008
by Eleanor Gregson, Sunday Sun

I’m no Lara Croft, and the prospect of taking on the North’s only professional “ultimate” female fighter did not fill me with confidence.
But after one look at martial arts supremo Lisa Newton — who stands at 5ft 1in and weighs just seven and a half stone — I thought I had nothing to worry about. I was wrong.

Impact self-defense : Alive and kicking

Alive and kicking
By Ariel Rubinsky

At Impact self-defense, women learn confidence by delivering real blows

In order to overcome the fear of being attacked, the experts at El Halev believe, women must get as close as possible to an attack. In other words, the attack must be simulated as closely as possible, and one's reaction must be practiced - with real blows - so the women can feel their strength.

That is why the El Halev nonprofit association, which promotes martial arts among women, has adopted a self-defense course called Impact, designed to change the woman's concept of herself as part of a process of female empowerment.

New president urges women to learn karate

New president urges women to learn karate

India's first female president urged women to learn martial arts such as karate for self-defence, a week after new figures showed a sharp jump in the number of rapes.

Pratibha Patil told a women's conference that laws must be stricter on punishing sex offenders, but that women should also fight back.

"Self-defence is the best defence," President Patil said.

"And one important step in this direction is imparting physical education - like judo and karate - for self-defence to girls from a very early age so as to make them physically strong and to build up self-confidence to face the challenges of life,"she said.

The 72-year-old president's comments came after a spate of rape and molestation complaints by female tourists this month, and attacks on Indian women by a drunken mob during New Year's celebrations.

Delhi's local government vowed to introduce tough laws to deal with sex offenders in the national capital, which topped the police report with 4134 attacks in 2006, making it the most dangerous city for women in India.

Escrima goes beyond stick, sword fighting

Escrima goes beyond stick, sword fighting

Growing up, Karen Gionson-Coloma had a fascination with martial arts, watching "Black Belt Theater" and fawning over Bruce Lee.

Years later, with her hectic schedule — working nights and raising two daughters — she never had the time to take classes.

But six months ago, she took a job working at her daughter's school, which freed up her evenings.

She immediately signed up for escrima.

Jeff Engelhardt
Issue date: 1/31/08

The single stroke of a bell is all Jill Fickes remembers about her first fight.

Fickes was so nervous before the fight she doesn't remember how she beat an opponent with a 50-pound weight advantage, but she does remember the adrenaline rush.

Fickes has chased that rush ever since on her way to becoming a nationally ranked mixed martial artist. The 31-year-old is a Golden Gloves champion, has studied martial arts for the better part of 23 years and has trained with some of the best fighters in the world.
