Miku Matsumoto: One Busy Woman

Miku Matsumoto: One Busy Woman
Friday, August 15, 2008
by Tony Loiseleur (tloiseleur@sherdog.com)

Is Miku Matsumoto a woman on a mission or a woman who just really loves what she does? Maybe she’s both.
As the women’s lightweight champion in Deep, Matsumoto has achieved a surprising level of success in a few short years. This is especially astonishing when one considers the fact that most Japanese women with an interest in fisticuffs tend to hold down jobs outside of fighting professionally, leaving mixed martial arts as little more than a time-consuming hobby.

Mixed martial arts - Vallejo Times Herald

Mixed martial arts - Vallejo Times Herald:

Despite its reputation as a man's sport, women are beginning to make waves in MMA By DAN NIED/Times-Herald sports writer

"The knee was blink-of-an-eye quick, and would have been nearly invisible if not for a staccato, upward jerk of Leigh Schlosser's head upon impact.

For a split second, everyone in the training room at Combat Fitness in Vallejo paused to let out a slight gasp at one of those small things that's not exactly planned.

But Schlosser ignored it, staying in the moment of the drill, keeping her weight on top of Erin Beal without vengeance for Beal's errant knee.

The setting was almost begging for a knee to the chin. At Combat Fitness, a martial arts academy tucked into a corner of the Lakeridge Fitness health club on Sereno Drive, the two women drilled in a"

Lubbock mother embraces violent world of mixed martial arts fighting

Lubbock mother embraces violent world of mixed martial arts fighting
By Marlena Hartz | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Lights shine bright into the ring.
In practice, her brown hair often fell loose from her ponytail. Tonight, it's pulled into two, tight braids.
Her feet are bare. Her padded boxing gloves are gone, replaced by a thin, fingerless pair.
She thought she'd be nervous. But there are no butterflies in her stomach.

MMA: Katrine Alendal

" Take Katrine Alendal. A professional MMA fighter, she spends almost all of her free time training at Fairtex (when she isn’t bartending). She has separate coaches for Muay Thai, Jujitsu, strength training and boxing. She has a trainer, a former heavyweight boxer turned mixed martial artist, but says boxing may be the weakest part of her game. But her punches are crisp and full of power. If someone walks into her right cross, it’s lights out.

Though Alendal lost her first professional fight, she showed a fighter’s heart. Rather than tapping out once her opponent had her in a chokehold and conceding the match (as is customary), she fought on until she finally passed out. Though she could have been seriously hurt, one can’t help but admire her tenacity.

As fighters like Alendal incorporate more boxing into their fight game, they might give boxing its heart back. Viewers like myself won’t need expensive pay-per-view events to see good boxing and watch good fights. "
