Women Fight Their Way Into Mixed Martial Arts - NAM
Women Fight Their Way Into Mixed Martial Arts - NAM:
"SAN FRANCISCO -- As mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting continues to draw capacity crowds to arenas and sports bars from Tokyo to Las Vegas, many commentators see its appeal in its similarity to street fighting. Legal MMA moves such as 'take downs,' 'choke holds' and 'ground and pound' techniques (where a fighter pins his opponent down and beats him with his fists and elbows) can come across more like barroom brawl strategies than practiced moves and give MMA a reputation as a male-dominated, testosterone-driven sport.
However, a growing number of women fighters like Katrine (pronounced Katrina) Alendal paint a different picture. 'Mixed martial artists are some of the most conditioned athletes in the world,' says the 36-year-old fighter who studies muy-thai kick-boxing, jiujitsu, Western boxing and judo. 'It takes a lot of skill, a lot of training and a lot of conditioning.' She emphatically denies any relationship between MMA and street fighting."

Female MMA - Mayra Conde
Nickname The Strong Warrior
Height 5ft 4in (163cm)
Weight 158lb (72kg)
Born 28 January 1969
Fighting out of The Beverly Hills Jiu-Jitsu Club
Town of birth Guatemala City, Guatemala
Fighting style Brazilian jiu-jitsu, MMA, Kickboxing
Mayra Conde is a mixed martial artist, who has also competed in kickboxing, brazilian jiu-jitsu and bodybuilding.
Conde hails from Guatemala City, where she grew up on her grandparents' farm. She has spoken fondly of her time there in interviews, as well as citing her grandfather as "my source of strength". However, at the age of nine when her younger brother was born, Conde moved with her parents to Toronto, Canada, hoping for a better education.
Her early years as an immigrant were tough; "I was constantly picked on because I couldn't speak English and was very small". Conde proved up to the challenge, never failing a grade, and is now bilingual, speaking both her native Spanish and adopted English. While still at school, Conde got into sports drinks and nutrition through her father, which led to her becoming a bodybuilder at the age of 16. Her muscular physique proved useful when she moved into construction work after high school. Earning a living as a welder, she would later become a foreman.
In August 1998, despite having no previous grappling experience, Conde still won first place in the women's heavyweight division of Canadian Grapplers Challenge. She says the guillotine choke she bested her first opponent with "was a natural movement when she shot in on me...People asked me how long I had been grappling and I said that I needed to get started." Conde also retained her interest in bodybuilding; the pull of Venice Beach proved irresistible. She left Canada for California along with a friend, Olga Bakalopoulos, who would also become both a weightlifter and mixed martial artist.
California brought Conde her first taste of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, training at the Beverly Hills Jiu Jitsu Club with such luminaries as Mark Kerr and Bas Rutten. Learning from them and another trainer, Marcus Vinicius, she would later fight in the US, Brazil and Greece, and was a part of the groundbreaking all-female Hook N Shoot Revolution promotion.

After becoming the first woman, along with Leiticia Pestova, to be part of the first ever NSAC-sanctioned female fight, Carano followed it up a few months later by becoming the first woman to fight and win a MMA fight for the Strikeforce promotion when she defeated Elaina Maxwell in December.
Now Gina steps back into the spotlight in this week’s episode of “Warrior Nation”, debuting on MSNBC January 23rd, as they chronicle her and Elaina Maxwell’s journey to their Strikeforce showdown.
“I haven’t gotten to see it yet, so I don’t know what to expect, but I know that I was myself throughout the whole taping,” said Gina Carano of her episode of “Warrior Nation.”

Height 5ft 6in (168cm)
Weight 175lb (79kg)
Chest: 43"
Biceps: 15"
Legs: 26"
Calves: 16"
Born 20 January 1978
Fighting out of Beverly Hills Jiu Jitsu
Town of birth Toronto, Canada
Fighting style Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Olga Bakalopoulos is a female mixed martial artist.
She was born in Toronto, Canada, where she lived for 15 years, also living in Greece for 3 years (she is fluent in Greek). She now lives in Los Angeles, California, of which she says "it was always a dream of mine to come".
She states on a female bodybuilding site that "as a teenager I was always interested in sports and strength events", taking part in basketball, field hockey and soccer, among others. At the age of 17, she found inspiration in the female bodybuilder Nikki Fuller - "I thought and still think that that's the way a female is meant to look". She has worked with weights extensively since then, lifting 4 times a week.
She began her martial arts training after a friend introduced her to wrestling. Having competed in that sport, she later took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu; she has been trained by 4th degree black belt Marcus Vinicius at the Beverly Hills Jiu Jitsu Club since February 1999. Bakalopoulos then moved into MMA during the year 2000 (she states in an ADCC interview that she started in 1998, but this may refer to her wrestling). When asked by Thomas Gerbasi about women in combat sport, Bakalopoulos replied:
"In every other sport you see women having a place. Women have as much right to be in this as the guys do. In the beginning, it wasn't all that great but now you have women like Lucia Rijker and Laila Ali, they're just phenomenal fighters. Every year the sport gets bigger, more women get into it, and they're saying 'hey, I can do this.' It's going to be awesome."
According to her entry on Fightergirls.net, she counts Bas Rutten and Marco Ruas amongst her former trainers.
Due to her beautiful appearance and her cozy nature, Olga had lots of fans all around the world. Olga was one of the best wrestling and MMA instructors in the world and transmitted her knowledge on several tours around the world. In 2005 Olga retired as a professional MMA fighter and no longer gave private MMA and wrestling lectures.
